How to Survive an Operating System Crash

September 3, 2010

“We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows could not be accessed or located.”

It happens to the best of us. A complete operating system failure. One day you might turn on your p.c. and that dreadful message is on your screen as plain as day. You don’t know what you could have possibly done, as your computer was working fine just a little while ago.

Panic is usually the first thing to set in. Something like an operating system failure can literally put home business owners out of business indefinitely. The cost and time involved in trying to repair a p.c. and the months or even years of lost information is overwhelming and frightening to think about.

This doesn’t have to happen to you if you are prepared.

When you think about it, our businesses are at the mercy of technology. The technology is only as good as long as it’s working properly. What a wonderful world we would live in if technology were flawless.

The reality is that systems fail. Computers are machines and machines sometimes break down. It doesn’t get any simpler that than. We have no other choice than to be prepared for when those times come, especially IF we want to make sure our home business suffers very little down time.

There are some very easy things you can do right now to make ensure your peace of mind for your business. You need to be back up and running as quickly as possible in the event of an operating system crash.

1. Document everything including usernames, passwords, merchant account numbers, important websites and especially software unlock codes. Anything that is not written down on paper is subject to be lost.

2. Back up your hard-drive as necessary for how often you have new updates that you cannot afford to lose or rebuild.

** Important! If you have to completely reinstall your operating system, the “My Documents” folder is usually lost. Make sure you don’t forget this folder when you do the back up.

3. Make sure all of your .exe, zip and software install files are on a disk. This is easily done by backing them up or burning them onto a CD. You should already have the system restoration and any other store-bought software disks handy.

The actual repair or reinstall of your operating system may simple or it may be complicated. If you are well versed in this area, you may be able to restore the system yourself. If you’re like most of us, you may have to call a computer repair professional.

When your p.c. is restored, you will be able to simply reinstall your software and documents files from the disks you created. If you have access to a secondary p.c., you can install your programs on the backup computer in the interim.

Regardless, you will rest much easier knowing that you have taken some basic steps necessary to prepare yourself and protect your business.

This very same scenario happened to me just recently. It could have been a disaster for my business, but it wasn’t. I was prepared and was back up and running within 24 hours.

Don’t wait until it’s too late.

To Your Success!

Whats In A Name: Selecting the Right Business Name

September 3, 2010

With all that’s written about selecting a domain name, I thought I would address the ART of selecting a name for your business. It’s by no means an easy task or one that should be taken lightly. So here we go.

Ask 500 people, already in business, how they decided upon their business name and you will get 500 different answers. Everyone has a story behind how they chose their business name. Even if the business is named after their own birth name, there’s probably a reason why this was done.

When you open a business, in a sense, you are giving birth. This new birth was created from an idea by you or your associates. It will have its own bank account, it’s own federal identification number, it’s own credit accounts, it’s own income and it’s own bills. On paper, it is another individual! Just as if you were choosing a name for an unborn child, you need to spend considerable time in deciding upon your business name.

There are several reasons why a good business name is vitally important to your business. The first obvious reason is because it is the initial identification to your customers. No one would want to do business with someone if they didn’t have a company name yet. This makes you look like an amateur who is very unreliable. Even if you call your company “Bill’s Lawn Service”, a company name has been established and you are indeed a company. People will therefore feel more comfortable dealing with you.

Secondly, a business name normally is an indication as to the product or service you offer. “Joan’s Typing Service”, “Karate Club for Men”, “Jim-Dandy Jack-of-all-Trades”, “Main Street Laundry”, “Missy’s Gift Boutique” and “Star Publishers” are all examples of simple business names that immediately tell the customer what product you offer.

However, most people will choose the simple approach when naming their business. They use their name, their spouse’s name, their children’s names or a combination of these names when naming a business. The national hamburger-restaurant chain “Wendy’s” was named after, owner, Dave’s daughter. Actually, research has proven that these “cutesy” names are not the best names to use for a business. Many experts claim that it makes the business look too “mom-and-pop-sie.” But this depends on the business. If you are selling something that demands this mood or theme to appeal to your market, it’s okay to use this approach.

Names like, “Sensible Solutions”, “Direct Defenders”, “Moonlighters Ink”, “Printer’s Friend”, “Strictly Class”, “Collections and Treasures”, and “Starlight on Twilight” are all good examples of catchy names. These types of names relate to your product or service but serve as a type of slogan for your business. This is a big help when marketing.

When you name a child, you may not decide upon a definite name until after they are born. Hospital nurseries are loaded with “Boy” Smith and “Girl” Jones name tags. You do this because a name is sometimes associated with a type of personality. Somehow, I don’t think Tarzan and Jane got the message, “Boy”? (dah!). When you name a business you may need to wait until you have a product or service to sell and then decide upon a business name before going into the business itself because your business name should give some clue as to what product or service you are selling. A business named “Joe’s Collections” normally wouldn’t sell car parts and a business named “Charlie Horse” would not sell knitting supplies.

To generate ideas – begin looking at business signs everywhere you go. Notice which ones catch your eye and stick in your mind. Try and figure out “why” they stuck in your mind. Naturally, the business “Dominos Pizza” sticks in your mind because it is nationally known. These don’t count! Look around and notice the smaller businesses. Take your time. Within a few days you should be able to come up with a few potential business names.

Then, when you finally find a few names you really like – try reciting them to other people and get their opinion. It won’t be long until your business will have the proper name that will carry it through it’s life!

A final thought. Are they kidding? What your company does or long product description, domain names?

Try VeryLongBusinessNamesThatAreHardToRemember.com (and enter it without a typo)?

Well maybe it’s just me; but what happened to KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid)?

How to Boost Conversion Rates, While Lowering Merchant Account Fees!

September 3, 2010

Using an Address Verification System (AVS) when processing your online credit card transactions can help to reduce the number of fraudulent transactions you receive. However, most online merchants don’t know that using AVS can also reduce your number of legitimate orders.

Using AVS can hurt your conversion rates in two main ways.

1. If you set your AVS rules to reject all transactions that do not match both street address and zip code, you may be loosing legitimate sales from customers who do not understand that the billing address needs to match the address that their credit card statement is mailed to.

2. The more troublesome problem with AVS occurs when your customer has recently moved. Even if you update your billing address with your credit card company after you move, it can take up to 6 months or longer for them to update the AVS database with your new information (even though they make sure that the bill arrives at the right address!)

The worst part about this delay is that often customers will blame the merchant if their card gets rejected for this reason. If their credit card bill arrives at the right address, they assume that their credit card company updated their information. When a card that they know should work gets rejected by your website, they often become angry with you, not their card provider!

This happened to me recently. I moved my family into a larger home over eight months ago and the debit card that I use for most of my online purchases still gets rejected unless I use my old billing address, even though the bank statement has come to our new address from day one!

The solution to the first problem is quite easy. Simply make sure that you use a statement near your “Billing Address” fields telling your customers something along the lines of, “To speed processing of your order, please ensure your billing address matches the address on your credit card statement.”

Include this type of statement near your “Billing Address” fields and your AVS matches will improve.

In markets with historically low attempted fraud rates, you can also try loosening your AVS rules a bit. Most AVS systems check both the number in the street address and the zip code. By setting your AVS rules to accept transactions that match for only one of the two AVS numbers, but still rejecting transactions that do not match for both, you can improve the number of successful transactions. If you attempted fraud rate is very low you can even try accepting transactions that fail both AVS checks, but flag the transactions for additional follow up before shipping.

Before loosening your AVS rules, you need to understand that most merchant account providers classify transactions that do not match for both street address and zip code as “non-qualified” transactions. These transactions usually get charged a higher discount rate than your normal discount rate. Depending on you merchant account agreement this penalty can add up to an additional 2% above your normal discount rate, so check with your merchant account provider before accepting “no match” transactions.

The solution to the second problem take a little bit more work to implement, however it can significantly reduce the number of AVS mismatches you receive. For this solution you can keep your AVS system set to reject “no match” transactions, however you need to modify your “Card Rejected” error page to include a brief educational statement, such as the one below.

“We’re sorry, your credit card has been declined. This can happen for several reasons. Your billing address* should match the address on your credit card statement. Please check your billing address, card number and expiration date and try again.

*NOTE: If you have recently moved, your credit card company may not have updated your billing address in their Address Verification Database. It can take up to 6 months or longer for some credit card companies to update your address, even if they send your bill to your new address. If you have recently moved, try using your previous billing address when you check out.”

By making just a few changes in the way you use AVS at your web site and by educating your customers about address verification, you can boost your conversion rates and sales, while lowering your merchant account fees!

Getting Started: Creating a Business Plan

September 3, 2010

You’re excited. You have a great idea for a profitable online business. Maybe it is an original idea that has not been marketed online before. Maybe you have come up with a new spin on the ordinary. Whatever it is that has influenced you to start your online business, be sure that you have a plan before you begin. This is not the time to “pick it up as you go”. These are some basic things that should be included in your business plan.

The business summary should give a brief description of the entire business and is an integral part of the overall business plan. After you have completed the business summary you should begin to list the objectives or the goals that you want to accomplish through the business. Next and perhaps most importantly, you should develop your marketing plan. The marketing plan will address all the specifics of the business. When developing the marketing strategy you should consider the following:

Target Market
The target market is all the customers that you expect to see visiting your site. For example will your product be more appealing to college students or those who are in retirement?

The Competition
Consider the competition for your product when determining the marketing strategy. Choose a product that will be seen as unique and useful. Visit sites that are offering the same or similar products. Find out the cost, and how they are marketing their product. Find out the pros and cons of their business and try to improve your product based on their flaws.

Do Your Research
Research the various methods for advertising online. You should become educated about search engines and how they work since each one is different. Also be sure that you know how to submit your site to search engines. You should be prepared to spend a small amount of money on advertising, but the profits that you will gain from the advertisements will prove to be money well spent.

Pricing
Think about pricing. Again, look at the competition and see what similar products are selling for. Pricing can play a big role in the success of your product since selling a product well below the average price may lead customer to think that there is a problem with the product or that it is not of the best quality. However, pricing items too high could also deflect customers.

Shipping
Determine the shipping method. Be sure that you know how products will be shipped so that you can have shipping details clearly posted on your site. If you are shipping things of great value, you should consider providing shipping insurance. Also think about shipping outside the country that you live in.

Payment Options
Think about the different methods of payment that you will accept. If your business does not accept credit cards, you should be ready to give up half if not more of your sales. If you decide to accept credit cards will you use a merchant account or will you use a third party credit card processing center? Both will help you get started and the third party processing center will handle all of the business so you don’t have to. You should decide which you will use and also if you will accept checks or money orders. It is essential to have a secure server when taking credit cards.

These few things will help your online business to become a great success and also provide you with peace of mind knowing that you have thoroughly thought about and planned for the opening of your online business.

How to Choose Lingerie

September 3, 2010

In my business, I talk to a lot of gals and guys about lingerie. Ladies, if you heard what the guys say, you’d feel a lot better about your bodies. And, men, if you heard what the gals say, that last piece of lingerie you bought her…..well…she used it to decorate her shoelaces. Men want skimpy. Women want enhancement.

So how do you pick something sexy that both of you will like? The answer is simple. Be aware of the other’s preferences. Men and women are different in what turns them on romantically.

Usually, when a man strolls into my store, he walks in, buys something, walks out. When he needs help he’s specific in his needs. “Miss, do you have a piece of string, size medium, in Jeep Cherokee white, for my wife? It’s our anniversary.”

Men want to see skin. Lots of it. and, the more skin they want to see, the more likely it is that it’s going to be skin that’s bumpy or birthmarky. Women don’t want guys to see those parts. Most women have at least one of these parts. Sometimes, it’s even part of a set. Like many women, the part that I’m trying to hide is my stomach. To ensure that my belly’s seen by as few people as possible I’ve tattooed these instructions on it: to be viewed only by medical personnel who are removing something underneath..

When a woman buys lingerie, she is trying to accomplish at least one of three objectives: show something, hide something or pretend you’ve got something. The skinny girls usually don’t want to hide anything; they want to show stuff, and pretend they’ve got stuff. The bigger girls want to show and hide stuff. And, if the stuff is supposed to be big and it’s little, that’s when you buy the stuff to pretend you’ve got it. And, if the stuff is big and that stuff looks good big, that’s when you show it. And, if it’s big and it should be small, cover it up. Guys, we work so hard to please you, that we not only cover up the big parts that don’t look good big, we actually try to squish them in. That’s why women go to the bathroom in pairs. To make sure no one explodes.

Women who have a C cup or larger need support when they’re wearing lingerie. Applauding is not what I mean by support. Guys think architectural engineering. You know the way those cables hold the Golden Gate Bridge up? Bra straps work the same way, except you don’t have all those cars going through.. And, underwires are like support beams. Without basic support, a structure will fall. Think about that Leaning Tower of Pisa. It looks like it will topple over any moment. That’s the fate awaiting large chested women without the proper bra support. Years from now, they’ll be leaning over from the weight of it all.

So, the bottom line is that women want to look beautiful for their sweeties. And, men think that a woman’s bare skin is what looks sexiest on her. Keep that in mind, folks, next time you go shopping for lingerie.

Hey, wait a minute……my honey just bought me a gift. It’s….what appears to be….. lingerie. Hmmmmmm. What the?! …… It’s a piece of string… with a neon feather. I guess it’ll work as an anklet. For my sister’s next birthday.

Best Home Gyms Tips

Best home gyms

It isn’t always easy to find the best home gyms without a little trepidation. But have no fear as shopping through what are touted as the best home gym has been simplified.

No kidding, stop and think about what you want to accomplish, weight loss, toning, shaping and body building may be part of your goals. But how hard can it to lift weight or bend over. Maybe we’ve gotten a little carried away with what once was and frankly still is a very simple activity.

The real question may very well be, how much portability do I want, how much space do I have, and what is my budget. You can buy very expensive equipment but for most of us that’s probably not necessary.

The fun part is to sit back, kick off the shoes, grab your favorite drink and mans best animal friend and have some fun. Heck, you’ll find plenty of stuff on the internet to choose from and really won’t get confused doing it. No one to sell you on the merits of the million dollar machine that you really don’t need. Don’t get me wrong, I agree there may be times for the biggie but seldom is the case for most of us.

Most folks can land up with a very expensive clothes hanger if you get my meaning. Go online to the search box and type in best home gyms and see what you find. Have fun.

Here?s A Golf Training Tip To Boost Your Drives

September 3, 2010

Every golfer would like to have a golf training tip to increase their drives by 10, 20, 30 or even 40 yards. But what do you need to focus on to accomplish that?

Have you ever received a golf training tip that didn’t work? I think we all have. That can be very frustrating to say the least. But the key to implementing a golf training tip that’s effective is to look at your swing.

Do you lack a full, 90 degree shoulder turn on your backswing? Do you breakdown at impact where it really counts? Or do you have a hard time staying in your golf posture through out your swing?

You’ve got to take a deeper look at your swing faults AND physical limitations to determine what golf training tip will be the most effective in improving your driving distance.

Don’t just try any golf training tip your golfing buddies tell you. Give it some serious thought before you do one of the golf training tips in the magazines. There are hundreds golf training tips you can read about, but won’t work for you.

Have you ever heard of the “62 point check-list?”

If you haven’t, it means instead of having one golf training tip you think about during your swing, you think of 62 of them. Maybe not that many, but you think of enough to accomplish what they term “paralysis by analysis”.

When this happens, your swing will go south real quick. This happened to the Number One ranked golfer in the world back in the 90’s. His name? Nick Faldo. He became so mechanically he couldn’t even hit a ball. He would enter a tournament and take so many practice swings, and not have one golf training tip on his mind, but many.

It took him right out of the world rankings and ultimately off the tour. He is now commentating and doing a great job.

Here’s a golf training tip that will help your backswing range of motion, enabling you to have a much higher clubhead speed and quickly improve your driving distance.

I call it the Backswing Shoulder Stretch:

? Extend left arm out in front of you (if you are a right handed golfer), in a handshake position, thumb pointing skyward.

? Take right hand and put under left wrist, so the back of the hands are touching each other.

? Pull with right hand against left wrist and make as big a turn on back swing as possible.

? Hold for at least 15 seconds, repeat two more times.

? Reverse the stretch to work the follow through.

As you can see this is a simple golf training tip, but one that is very effective if you do it consistently. This is a great stretch to do throughout your round to maintain a full backswing.

This is just one golf training tip that can have a big impact on your performance; and is well worth trying.

Trading in Corporate Office for Home Office

September 3, 2010

Six years ago, I had not yet turned on a computer. Today I run several successful Internet Businesses and by me being a single parent of 4 children my friends calls me a marketing expert.

My road to success was one of perseverance. Twelve hours a day, Seven days a week, learning code, mastering submission techniques, building web sites and databases. To think only six years age, I was stuck up in a office eight hours a day and not at home. Here’s my story…

It’s 1998…..In my office Mentally and Physically burnt out all I can think about was trading this environment in for my Home. (of all things)

Well to make a long story short every program I have ever been involved in has been a learning experience.

My successes have inspired me while my failures have challenged me. In five years, I have vecome experts in running an Internet business.

I attribute my success to my willingness to learn and my commitment to help the people that put their confidence in me.

What did I learn?

*I learned to build a community, not a business.

*To offer something of value first, something for

sale later.

*To do more, not less.

*To be persistent and dedicated.

*To follow up, but not push.

*To learn the things I did not understand.

*To track all advertising campaigns.

*To promote…promote…and then promote

some more!

And with all of that I can honestly say that I can hardly wait to get in

my home office everyday. There is nothing more exciting than running your own business from your home.

I hope I can continue to help other Internet Marketers share that same feeling.

As always, I wish everyone great success.
